How much does an AI agent for business cost in 2026: price, monthly costs, payback
An AI agent for business costs from $800 per process. What the price is made of, the monthly costs after launch and how to calculate payback.
An AI agent for business costs from $800 for one process: for example, answering customers in chat and Telegram, or taking phone calls. But "how much does it cost" usually hides two questions: what you pay once for development, and what the agent costs every month after launch. We cover both, and at the end show how to work out whether an agent will pay off for you.
In short
- Building an AI agent for one process and one or two channels costs from $800 and takes 1-2 weeks to the first result.
- After launch you only pay for usage: model tokens usually cost tens of dollars a month, plus telephony for a voice agent.
- The price goes up with the number of channels, integrations with your systems, actions the agent takes on its own, and voice.
- Payback depends on what share of requests can be closed without a person. In our case the support agent closed 41.5% of tickets without an operator.
- The cheapest agent with no knowledge base and no tests ends up the most expensive: it makes mistakes in front of customers.
What the cost is made of
| What | When you pay | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Agent development: scenarios, knowledge base, integrations, tests, launch | Once, per scope | From $800 |
| Model tokens (OpenAI, Anthropic and others) | Monthly, at cost | Usually tens of dollars |
| Telephony and minutes (voice agent only) | Monthly, at cost | At your provider's rates |
| A server for automations, if self-hosted | Monthly | Usually up to a few tens of dollars |
| Support and retraining | By agreement | Separately, if needed |
Model and telephony accounts are registered to your company, so you see monthly costs directly, with no markup from us.
How much different AI agents cost
| Agent | What it does | Price | What makes it pricier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support AI agent | Answers customers in chat, Telegram, Instagram and email from your knowledge base | From $800 | More channels, actions in a CRM or helpdesk |
| Voice AI agent | Answers calls, books appointments, takes orders | From $800 | Several scenarios, outbound calls, telephony integration |
| Sales AI agent | Qualifies leads, books meetings, hands hot leads to the CRM | From $800 | Several lead sources, follow-ups |
| Order and inbox agent | Reads emails and orders, creates records in your systems, replies to the customer | From $800 | Several systems, complex documents |
What affects the price
- Number of channels. One website chat costs less than website, Telegram, Instagram and email together. Each channel has to be connected and tested.
- Integrations. An agent that only answers is simpler than one that checks order status in the CRM, books into a calendar or creates a deal.
- Actions without a person. The more the agent does on its own (returns, rescheduling, placing orders), the more checks it needs so it does not make mistakes.
- Voice. A voice agent costs more to run than a text one: telephony, speech recognition, a dictionary of real product names and separate tests on calls.
- State of the knowledge base. If answers are already written down, the start is faster. If they have to be collected from managers' heads, that takes part of the time.
- Where data is stored. For sensitive data the agent can run on your server. Setup costs more, but data never leaves the company.
Monthly costs after launch
After launch the main line item is model tokens: you pay for each answer the agent gives. For most small and mid-sized businesses this is tens of dollars a month, because the agent answers briefly and takes knowledge from a base rather than a long prompt.
A voice agent adds telephony and voice platform minutes. Their cost depends on how many calls you get and how long they last, so we estimate it on your real volumes before launch.
A tip we learned on our own projects: set balance alerts in every service. Agents stop not because of a bug in the code, but because an account ran out of money. More in how to launch a voice AI agent.
How to calculate payback
Payback is simple: how much work the agent takes off people, and what that work costs.
Example. Support gets 3,000 tickets a month. The agent closes 40% without an operator; in our case it was 41.5%. That is 1,200 tickets a month that need no person. If one operator handles about 600 tickets a month, the agent takes the load of roughly two operators. Compare that with the development price and monthly costs, and you get the payback period.
For a sales agent, count differently: how many leads you lost to slow replies, and how many of them could have become customers. In our SaaS case the agent produced 2.4x more qualified leads.
What not to cut
- The knowledge base. Without it the agent makes up answers, and customers get false information in your company's name.
- Tests. Every change to the agent must be checked against a set of real questions, otherwise a fix in one place breaks answers in another.
- Human handoff. The agent must know its limits and hand the conversation to an operator in time, with the history.
- The first weeks after launch. That is when you see mistakes that never showed up in tests. They need daily review.
When an AI agent will not pay off
| Will pay off | Will not pay off |
|---|---|
| Many similar requests, calls or leads | A few requests a day |
| Answers can be described with rules and documents | Every request is a separate expert consultation |
| Customers write and call outside working hours | All requests come in working hours and the team keeps up |
| Leads are lost to slow replies | No losses from reply speed |
How we estimate the price for you
- Call and demo. We go through your process and show an agent on a similar case. This is free.
- Assessment. We look at what share of requests repeats and which systems need to be connected.
- A staged proposal. A fixed price per stage, plus a forecast of monthly costs on your volumes.
- Launch on part of the requests. First result in 1-2 weeks, then we scale what works.
FAQ
Why "from" rather than a fixed price?
An agent for one chat and an agent that works across five channels and places orders in a CRM are different amounts of work. We give an exact figure after the call and demo.
Can we start small?
Yes. Most often we start with one process and one channel, and add others after the first results.
Who pays for tokens and telephony?
You do, directly to the services and at cost. The accounts are registered to your company.
How long does launch take?
The first result usually comes in 1-2 weeks. A voice agent takes longer to fine-tune on live calls.
